Here is a step by step guide on administering your GLP Medication from a Multi-Dose Vial. As always, follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider. Instructions may vary from patient to patient and always verify your dose by checking with your provider, pharmacist, or checking the label on your medication.
- Gather Supplies: Alcohol Wipes, Medication and Syringes
- Wash Hands: Wash your Hands Thoroughly with Soap and Water
- Prepare the Vial: If it is a new vial there may be a hard plastic cap on the top or a foil cover. The first time you use a vial, be sure to remove this to expose the rubber stopper.
Wipe the top of the vial (every time) with alcohol to ensure it is a clean surface, and let it dry. - Prepare the Needle / Syringe:
Remove the cap from the plunger side and the needle side of your syringe.
Prior to inserting it into the vial, you’ll want to draw up some air into the syringe. This will replace the medication you’re taking out of the vial so you don’t create a vacuum over time. Try to pull up the same amount of air as you intend to take as your dose of medicine (ie, if you’re planning to take 20 units of medicine, then draw up 20 units of air into the syringe prior to putting it in vial). - Draw Up Medication:
Puncture the top of the medication vial - aim for the middle and at all times keep the syringe and vial in a straight line so you don’t bend the needle.
Push the air into the vial of medication.
Tip the vial and syringe upside down and pull back on the plunger to get to your desired dose.
Remove the syringe and be careful it does not touch anything prior to puncturing the skin (you may re-cap the syringe if necessary). Check for air bubbles and remove them if necessary. - Prepare your Injection Site:
Wipe your desired injection area with alcohol and let it dry. Injection site options include:
- Back of arm
- Belly (stay more than 1-2 inches AWAY from belly button)
- Fatty part of thigh - Administer the Injection:
Most patients feel more comfort pinching the injection site for this step.
In the area that has been cleaned with alcohol, insert the needle at a 90 degree angle and depress the plunger to administer the medication under the skin. Your aim is under the skin - not in a muscle or any deeper areas.
Remove the needle - Dispose of the Needle:
In a sharps Container (available from pharmacy or Amazon)
In the normal trash (capped and inserted into a water bottle, milk jug or sharps container) - Store your Medication: Put the Medication Back in the Refrigerator
Tips for Success:
- Always double-check the dosage with a second person if possible.
Rotate injection sites to prevent skin irritation.
Follow any specific instructions provided by the healthcare provider.
