Caring for your lips after a filler treatment is just as important as the procedure itself. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro, understanding the do's and don'ts of lip filler aftercare can make a significant difference in the results and longevity of your treatment. What to do before your appointment...
1-2 days before…
If possible avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, aleve and fish oil as this may increase bruising. Avoid excessive alcohol the night before. Avoid sunburns. If you have a history of cold sores, let your provider know as you may require prescription antiviral medication.
Stages of Lip Filler Healing
Immediately after…
- Avoid touching the treated area for six hours.
- Avoid makeup for six hours after treatment.
- It’s normal to have redness, tenderness, swelling and itching sensation in treated area, especially as numbing agents wear off.
- You may take regular dose (325 to 1000mg) acetaminophen (tylenol) every 4-6 hours after your treatment for 1-2 days. Do not exceed 4000mg of acetaminophen (tylenol) within a 24 hour period.
- You may apply ice for 20 minutes at a time, every 4-6 hours for the first 12-24 hours after treatment.
The following week…
- The initial swelling after lip treatment may last up to a week.
- Bruising is also quite common but should resolve within 5-7 days.
- As the swelling resolves, lips can look somewhat uneven during this time. For up to 3 weeks you could feel “lumpy bumpy” and be aware of the filler, but by 4 weeks it should be fully integrated into the surrounding tissue. We like to wait a full 3+ weeks before evaluating for any touch-ups that may be necessary.
Follow ups...
- Love your results but want more? Your MOBO provider can assess your lips to see if you could tolerate more lip filler. We typically inject lip filler 1 syringe or 0.5 syringes within one sitting to avoid complications.
- Unhappy with your lip filler results? The filler we use is reversible. We use hyaluronidase (a naturally-occurring enzyme in the body that metabolizes hyaluronic acid) to completely dissolve the filler in as little as 24 hours.
What to Avoid After Lip Filler
- Avoid kissing/massaging/touching your lips. This also includes any other sexual activities involving the mouth.
- Do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. sauna or tanning) or extreme cold for at least two weeks.
- Do not use a straw for 1-2 weeks.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24-48 hours after lip fillers. Alcohol acts as a blood thinner and can increase the likelihood of inflammation, bruising, and swelling.
- Limit foods high in sodium, especially the first 48 hours after lip filler. Salt increases swelling, and salty foods can also irritate the lips.
- Avoid any dental procedures for 1 week after due to manipulation of the treatment area.
- No facials or chemical peels for 1 week post treatment (facials are OK day of treatment prior to cosmetic injections).
